To hasten the internal investigation and the revelation of the full scope of the effort to cheat emission regulations, VW has set a deadline for its whistleblower program, according to a report from Reuters citing the German paper Sueddeutsche Zeitung. Volkswagen provided more details about the cars for which it made false claims about fuel economy and emissions of carbon dioxide, a cause of global warming.

(Previously, the emissions at issue have been NOx, or nitrogen oxide.) Volkswagen has not yet elaborated on this statement.

While the sales decline in Europe was modest, it was potentially serious for the company because the region accounts for about 30 per cent of Volkswagen brand sales worldwide, which totaled 4,90,000 in October. This type of approach would, in my opinion, demonstrate to all consumers – not just those who own VW products – that the company is fully committed to instituting a proper remedy to this problem once and for all.
