President Sir Craig Reedie has admitted the timing of the release of Richard McLaren’s report into alleged doping in Russian Federation was “destabilising” so close to Rio 2016 but claimed they “acted without delay”.
The respective governing bodies of athletics and weightlifting, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the International Weightlifting Federation, had already decided that no Russian athletes will take part in their sports during the Games.
“The result is death and devastation”.
“We have a doping problem”, the U.S. Olympic Committee chairman said.
Several global federations announced separately Thursday that they had received the final approval for Russian entries in their events, including boxing, judo, equestrian, volleyball and golf. The men’s volleyball team is the defending Olympic champion. “If you go through the list of speakers, you would not be surprised at what anybody said”.
Earlier this year, the meldonium doping scandal extended to Russian volleyball.
Until now, over 1,200 samples have been re-tested and banned substances were found in 98 samples.
They expressed disappointment following the IOC Executive Board’s decision to allow some Russians to compete and accused the Games’ ruling body of lacking the leadership and courage to punish Russia.
The US$3.1 billion (RM12.5 billion) expansion of the metro to Barra, the area housing the Olympic park and athletes’ village, is key to the smooth transport of tens of thousands of fans and athletes between the Games’ different competition zones.
The IOC also elected eight new members: Nita Ambani (India), Sari Essayah (Finland), Ivo Ferriani (Italy), Luis Alberto Moreno (Colombia), Auvita Rapilla (Papua New Guinea), Anant Singh (South Africa), Tricia Smith (Canada) and Karl Stoss (Austria). “Knowing the Russian character, we will compete”.
IOC President Thomas Bach said a decision will be announced later Thursday, just a day before the opening of the games, following a review of the doping records of individual Russian athletes.
It’s not the first time CAS has struck down an International Olympic Committee anti-doping measure.
“History will talk about a Rio de Janeiro before the Olympic Games and a much better Rio de Janeiro after the Olympic Games”. “It puts their efforts into perspective and highlights their tremendous achievements”, Bach said.
The women are Irina Dolgova, Natalia Kuziutina, Ekaterina Valkova and Ksenia Chibisova.
The Rio Olympics Games will also see for the first time that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) take charge of sanctioning drug cheats.
Fourth-ranked Stan Wawrinka is withdrawing from the Olympics because of injury, leaving the Rio Games without half of the ATP’s top 10.
“Yes, there’s some disconnect and we’re going to have bridge that gap”, said Pound, who was WADA’s inaugural president, leading the Montreal-based organisation from 1999-2007.
He added: “We want to keep the cheaters away from the Olympic Games”.
Pan made a quick, passing reference to environmental concerns surrounding these Olympics, including the need for artificial snow production.
Bach also said the IOC decision to ban whistleblower 800-meter runner Yulia Stepanova is in line with the Olympic Charter.
The IOC initially asked worldwide federations to decide which athletes could compete but later ruled that an independent panel would have the final say.
“It is not the reputation of the International Olympic Committee that needs to be restored but the reputation of WADA”, Gilady said.
Despite evidence of a vast state-organized program involving Olympic sports in Russia, the IOC board rejected calls for a total ban and left it to worldwide sports federations to decide on the entry of individual Russian athletes for the games.

Two of the athletes will participate in track and field, one in judo and one in fencing, Hosam al-Qurashi, executive director of the Saudi Olympic Committee, told The Associated Press on Sunday.
