Wainwright, defense falter as Cardinals lose 10-6 to Mets
The Mets entered the series 41/2 games back of the Cardinals and their wild-card ambitions would have taken a crushing hit had they been swept.

“It’s another game that we lose in which I start and the offense scores some runs”, Wainwright said. I don’t know what else to say, guys.
“We came into this series knowing we had to pick up some ground”, manager Terry Collins said.
Brandon Moss hit two home runs and Jedd Gyorko and Stephen Piscotty also connected as the Cardinals tried to chip away at a 7-0 deficit. He has a 2.31 ERA (three earned runs in 11 2/3 innings) in his first two starts.
It could have been a 3-0 deficit for the Cardinals had a call or a play gone the Cardinals’ way in the fifth inning. As a group of Cardinals went after the ball, Wainwright covered third base. He had his glove down on the base for the tag, but Yoenis Cespedes steps on Wainwright’s glove; and, he removes his hand instinctively to avoid a possible cleat puncture.
I have no idea if Cespedes should have been called out, if he was correctly called safe, or if everyone on the field should have been sent home and the game postponed for a later date for allowing for such an absurd play to occur, but from the replay it sure is hard to make a common sense argument that he’s safe.
De Aza made an impact with both his bat and his glove, as he robbed Cardinals leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter of a home run by making a fantastic leaping catch at the center-field wall in the bottom of the first.
I understand that. However, with the “flow of motion” by Wainwright, he didn’t expect to have his glove held hostage underneath the runners foot. A costly non call at third base in the fifth inning opened up a four run frame for the Mets.
Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright lost his glove trying to tag out Cespedes in a freaky play, and the New York Mets broke away soon after that to beat St. Louis 10-6 Thursday night.
Adam Wainwright allowed seven runs – two earned – on nine hits over five innings in Thursday’s loss to the Mets.
“He knows his role”, Collins said of De Aza. “He doesn’t have to like it, but he accepts it and he gets himself ready”. Lugo nonetheless earned his first major league win, and his first win since May 10 with Triple-A Las Vegas.
Thanks to an easy win last night in St. Louis, the Mets are very much in the National League Wild Card mix.
Together, Lugo and Gsellman helped the Mets win a road series from the first time since July 22-24 in Miami. Well, he shut us out over five innings and left the game with a 7-0 lead.
Greg Garcia, on a fielders choice, reached first, Mets got the out at second and Piscotty in to add a run to cut the Mets lead in half, 8-4. “I’m not saying that we got some life when he came out of the game and we made a go at it, but they just kept putting runs up”.
James Loney had a strong night at the plate, going 3 for 5 with three runs scored. Loney is hitting.529 (18 for 34) against Wainwright for his career.
He got that chance Thursday with Jay Bruce out with tightness in his right calf, an issue that had him leave Wednesday night’s loss in the second inning.
Cardinals: Matt Adams (right shoulder inflammation) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Memphis.
