Wal-Mart boosts forecast after 2nd quarter tops estimates

Vigilant Capital Management LLC increased its stake in shares of Wal-Mart Stores by 1,270.0% in the second quarter. Total revenue rose 0.5 percent to US$120.9 billion.

Total revenues edged up 0.5 percent to $120.854 billion from last year’s $120.23 billion.

NetApp, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP) reported a profit for its first quarter that gained ground compared to the same period a year ago.

The retailer has also taken steps to improve its workplace culture, boosting wages and upgrading stores, actions that have dipped into profits but which company officials say are also enticing customers with better customer service and a more pleasant shopping experience. This was up from $89 million, or $0.29 per share, in last year’s first quarter. On an adjusted basis, when taking out one-time gains and costs, earnings were $1.07 per share, which beat Wall Street estimates of $1.02 per share, according to Thomson Reuters.

These analysts also forecasted Growth Estimates for the Current Quarter for WMT to be -5.6%.

Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:HRL) increased 0.44% to close at $36.35 on 17 August.

The company has its Return on Assets (ROA) of 7.2 Percent. The stock has its Price to Earnings (P/E) ratio of 16.14 and Forward Price to Earnings ratio of 16.52. This includes a gain of $535 million from the sale of Yihaodian. The company said roughly $2.7 billion worth of sales were depleted by currency. Yet, overall the brick-and-mortar stores account for 96.7 percent of sales, while digital accounts for 3.3 percent, amounting to $544.6 million.

Another weak spot was the Sam’s Club unit, where comparable sales increased just 0.6 percent and store traffic declined. The Walmart International segment consists of operations in over 27 countries outside of the United States.
