Wal-Mart Stores Inc profit beats expectations, sending shares higher

Total revenues edged up 0.5 percent to $120.854 billion from last year’s $120.23 billion. The Q3 2016 consensus earnings estimates for the company have stabilized at US$0.93 per share.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT) soared 21.49% year-to-date. Analysts expected revenues of $120.16 billion. Stronger sales at Wal-Mart U.S. offset weaker results from its worldwide operations, which suffered from currency headwinds, while Sam’s Club also saw weakness.

Sales at USA stores open at least a year rose 1.6 percent, excluding fuel prices, to beat expectations in their eighth straight quarter of growth. We’re pleased with the adoption of this service, and we expect to roll this out nationwide later this year. This was driven by the seventh consecutive period of strong traffic, which jumped 1.2% YoY.

The retailer said it was hard to quantify the effects of low gasoline prices and unseasonably warm weather, but those factors contributed to overall sales growth.

Walmart said its ecommerce sales increased 11.8 percent primarily due to the continued rollout of its online grocery option and growth of pick-up in stores and clubs.

Total sales at Walmart U.S. during the second quarter was $76.421 billion, up 3.1% compared to the same quarter in 2015.

Wal-Mart International: Segment net sales, including fuel sales, declined 6.6% year over year to $28.6 billion. On a constant currency basis, it soared 47.5%. Stripping out the impact of currency, revenue would have risen 2.8% to $123.6 billion. Sam’s Club operating income, however, increased 10.3% to $472 million in the quarter. Excluding this, adjusted earnings per share were $1.07.

Additionally, the company has EPS of -1.39.

At Sam’s Club, comp sales for the period were slightly above Walmart expectations, McMillon said. Having a look at the historical EPS report, the company attained $4.59 EPS for the previous year. And Wal-Mart, which also raised its full-year guidance, is likely taking a share from its smaller rival. Analysts expect earnings of $4.27 per share for the year. (NYSE:WMT) share price closed at $72.93. It’s also struggling to reinvent its food section and it also cited weak electronics sales.
