Walmart is shuttering many stores around the world and the one located in Baltimore City is shuttering too.
More than 95 percent of the stores to be closed in the USA are within 10 miles of another Walmart. Ninety-five percent of those stores, the company said, are within 10 miles of another location.
“Actively managing our portfolio of assets is essential to maintaining a healthy business”, said Doug McMillon, president and CEO, Walmart Stores, Inc. Wal-Mart, which operated 558 stores in Brazil before the closures, has struggled as the economy there has soured.
Walmart’s announcement Friday morning comes three months after McMillon told investors the company would evaluate its portfolio to become more nimble.
Latest reports suggest that the out of the 296 locations that the company is shutting down will include 154 US locations and all of the company’s 102 Express format stores. But the concept never caught on, because the stores served the same objective as Walmart’s larger Neighborhood Markets: fill-in trips and prescription pickups.
Wal-Mart, which boasts almost 11,600 stores around the world, said the stores on the chopping block “represent less than 1 percent of both global square footage and revenue”.
Walmart Express marked the retailer’s entry into the convenience store arena.
The other 52 US stores are a mixture of Supercenters, WalMart’s largest format; discount stores; a grocery format called Neighborhood Market; and outlets in the company’s Sam’s Club bulk-selling wholesale chain.
Citing changes in its market strategy, big-box retailer Wal-Mart announced Friday it would be closing 269 stores globally, including 154 locations in the United States.
The company said it has plans to open between 50 to 60 “Supercenter” stores and 85 to 95 “Neighborhood Market” stores in the U.S.in the 2017 fiscal year.

Of the 16,000 associates – or employees – to be affected, 10,000 will be in the United States. Walmart did say that it will attempt to place workers in nearby locations, and will provide 60 days of pay and severance for workers who are not eligible for new placement.
