Wales lose wing Liam Williams to foot injury

He’s now been ruled out for the rest of the tournament with a foot injury.

The Wales back sustained the problem in the closing stages of Wales’ 15-6 Pool A loss to Australia at Twickenham on Saturday.

Liam Williams was a doubt ahead of the tournament after undergoing foot surgery in June to fix damage to his fifth metatarsal.

Williams, who can also play at full-back, battled to overcome a foot injury during World Cup preparations in the summer, but he gained a place in head coach Warren Gatland’s 31-man squad.

Williams joins Rhys Webb, Jonathan Davies, Scott Williams, Leigh Halfpenny, Eli Walker, Hallam Amos, Tom James, Jack Dixon and Cory Allen on the sidelines, with the Welsh selection committee now primed to call up cover. He was then concussed during the 28-25 pool win against England a fortnight ago, missing the Fiji game five days later, before returning to action when Wales took on the Wallabies.

He’s been playing outstandingly well, and did pretty well again yesterday until his injury. ‘We will wait and see what Gats wants to do. But it’s the Rugby World Cup and we have to get on with it.

On a positive note, Jenkins said Jamie Roberts is fine after getting a knock during yesterday’s Pool A decider against Australia.

Williams lined up on the left wing versus Australia and it may be that George North now has to revert to that position from the centre, with Wales having such limited options out wide.
