Walker’s 9th-inning homer lifts Mets over Tigers
Verrett is now 0-2 with a 5.61 ERA in his six starts since replacing Harvey after allowing six runs in just 3ª innings, and the Mets are 1-5 in those games. The Tigers grounded into double plays in the first, second and fourth. Dillon Overton (1-2) starts for the Athletics, who snapped a five-game skid Thursday night and are last in the AL West.

Victor Martinez #41 of the Detroit Tigers celebrates his two rum homer with teammate Miguel Cabrera #24 in the fourth inning during a Major League Baseball game against the New York Mets at Comerica Park on August 5, 2016 in Detroit, Michigan.
DETROIT: The Tigers have won all four of Boyd’s last four home starts versus a team with a winning record and are 6-1 in his last seven home starts. Verlander is scheduled to start for the Tigers in the opening game of a series Friday, Aug. 5, against the New York Mets.
Martinez got the lead back in the bottom of the inning, lining Syndergaard’s changeup deep into the right-field stands for a two-run homer.
The Tigers scored the first run of the game. As I said last week, he’s quietly had a terrific season, and is without question the rock of his team’s rotation. Right fielder Curtis Granderson patiently ran the ball all the way in, and Martinez was eventually tagged out in a rundown. Neither did the 6 2/3 innings of seven-hit ball thrown by Jacob deGrom, even though he did see a streak of 20 scoreless innings come to an end. Dellin Betances got four outs for his second save as NY took two of three from the AL Central leaders and finished 5-2 in the season series.
Detroit left-hander Matt Boyd will be seeking a chance to prolong his time in the rotation when he starts against the Mets. “I love this game and I love this team”, the 41-year-old Rodriguez said, often choking up.
Twins 6, Rays 2: Eddie Rosario had a pinch-hit two-run homer in the seventh inning, Miguel Sano homered and had three hits and Minnesota beat Tampa Bay.
Manager Brad Ausmus brought his closer, Francisco Rodriguez (1-2), in to protect a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth but he hit Alejandro de Aza with an 0-2 pitch to open the inning. The two hits he allowed were a solo homer by Angel Pagan in the fourth and a single by Denard Span in the sixth.

Justin Upton, who the Mets intentionally walked after Martinez to set up a force out, was already tracking toward third base with McGehee in limbo between first and second. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 31st save.
Castellanos could be out a month or more, the Freep reports.
The Mets – victimized by back-to-back infield singles in the seventh – managed to avoid a three-game sweep.

This marked the 11th time in deGrom’s career that he has allowed one run or fewer and failed to earn a win. They face Arizona and San Diego in a six-game homestand later this week, and then travel to Arizona for three games to begin a 10-game road trip.
