Wallaby on the loose in Gloucestershire

Police, who covered the freaky chase in a series of tongue-in-cheek Facebook postings, have warned the public not to approach the “strong and powerful” animal.

While many will feel wallabies are an unusual sight for Gloucestershire, Cattle Country Adventure Park in Berkeley is now home for two of the animals.

Anyone with information about the escaped kangaroo (or wallaby) can contact Gloucestershire police on 101, reference 462 of 26 September, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

We’re guessing this one won’t be too exciting for Australian readers, but in Britain it’s not every day the police have to track down an escaped wallaby.

They later added: “Kangaroo update – we have it cornered “outback” of a house in Woodmancote but no owner identified yet”.

Officers in the Woodmancote area of Dursley were called to reports of a kangaroo bouncing around – and later tweeted that they had the animal “cornered”, but it appears to have evaded capture and is still on the run, or hop.

At midnight officers the kangaroo was still at large.

Although coppers managed to corner it in a garden, the cunning kanga wasn’t in a mood to be caught. We’re not waiting for further sightings and for the owner to come forward’.

Rich Gillingham, whose garden was searched for the kangaroo, said: ‘That was one of the most freaky evenings of my life.

Some residents suggested it could have been from nearby Hartpury College, which was responsible for a similar incident in 2012.

A local farm has agreed to take the animal if it is caught.

The marsupial was last seen heading towards a wooded area near Woodmancote, where officers think it has “gone to ground”.
