Anne Marie Kehoe, Walmart’s vice president of toys, stated on a conference call with news media on Wednesday that the company has seen a significant momentum in toy sales from the day after Christmas through the spring season, and Walmart do not expect that to change. Wal-Mart will have more than 400 toys exclusively available at its stores, including Star Wars Black Series collector figures and the Barbie Camping Collection, Kehoe said. Some of the items on the list include a Disney Princess Carriage, a sky viper streaming drone and a Star Wars Electronic R2D2. Analyst estimates indicate that the program may account for as much as 15% of holiday revenue in poorer areas of the U.S., Reuters reported.

The mega-retailer says toy sales previous year stayed strong after Christmas through the spring, and it expects that trend to continue.

Still, industrywide, retail sales were not as robust as expected last holiday season.

Walmart is getting an early start on the holiday layaway program this year, starting Friday, September 2, 2016.

Ultimately, layaway programs seem like a great way to get people to pull the trigger on purchases instead of mulling them over at length, and if retailers offer friendly payment terms and position these programs the right way, they can lead to positive customer shopping experiences.

Wal-Mart expects the demand for toys to remain strong this year after sales surged in 2015 in conjunction with the release of the latest movie in the wildly popular'Star Wars series produced by Walt Disney Co. The next movie is due to premiere on Dec
