The e-commerce powerhouse launched the discounting event previous year to commemorate its 20th anniversary and to advertise its $99 annual Prime loyalty program, which offers free two-day shipping, during sleepy summer shopping months.

Launched in 2007, Amazon Prime is a membership programme that offers shoppers unlimited one-day delivery, streaming of 15,000 movies and TV episodes, and access to 800,000 Kindle books for £79 a year – or £5.99 a month. This year’s Prime Day is said to offer even more sales than last year’s, in which Amazon reportedly sold more than 34.4 million items and saw a 266% increase in worldwide orders compared to the same day in the previous year.

After much hype, speculation, anticipation and more than a few announcements of competing sales – we’re looking at you, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us – Amazon Prime Day 2016 is here.

Why: Amazon launched Prime Day past year to celebrate its 20th birthday. Amazon’s Prime Day last for twenty-four hours, and online shoppers can visit the Amazon website to check for discounts on the items they need. They knock the socks off of the pair of beats by dre I had before them. Amazon said it’s worked with vendors to increase supply, but still expects numerous deals to sell out fast. About half of Americans are now members, but if you aren’t in that group you can sign up for a free 30-day trial of the program to get in on the deals.

ShippingPass initially offered free three-day shipping, but in an effort to make the service more competitive, Walmart has reduced the free shipping to only two days.

Who qualifies for Amazon Prime Day?

According to CIRP’s new estimate, Amazon’s U.S. Prime membership rose from 44 million in June 2015 to 63 million now, representing 52 percent of the company’s overall U.S. customer base.
