Ahead of earnings coming this afternoon, Walt Disney (DIS -0.8%) has signed an agreement with Sony’s PlayStation Vue (SNE -0.5%) to bring Disney networks to the streaming video service. ABC prime-time programming also will be offered on-demand in all cities where PlayStation Vue multichannel packages are available.
Disney will offer ESPN, ABC-owned local stations, Disney Channel, ABC Family, which will become Freeform in January, and other networks on PlayStation Vue. Disney’s first Web TV distribution deal, struck with Dish Network Corp.DISH -0.83 % ‘s Sling TV, only allows for one stream at a time. Subscribers couldn’t watch the latest episode of ABC’s “Scandal” or put ESPN’s “SportsCenter” on in the background, because Disney and Sony hadn’t reached a deal to carry Disney-owned content. Today, the two behemoths reached that deal.
A wide selection of on-demand content from Disney and ESPN networks will be added to Vue, and subscribers will be able to “catch up” by watching shows they’ve missed within the past three days – without having to rely on Vue’s cloud-based DVR.
“PlayStation Vue provides a unique way to engage with our content and an opportunity to reach a segment of viewers who want a different kind of television experience”, said Justin Connolly, executive vp of affiliate sales & marketing, Disney and ESPN Media Networks. In its multichannel markets, PS Vue has been lacking access to ABC’s broadcast network while providing access to the broadcast feeds of CBS, Fox, and NBC.
Sony’s PlayStation Vue internet TV service just got way more compelling. Select standalone network channels are also available to users via PlayStation Vue’s nationwide a la carte offering.

PlayStation Vue is now available for users on PlayStation 4 and PS3 consoles, as well as iPad and iPhone.
