He will then feature in two Twenty20 matches against Australia next month.

Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan will quit global cricket after the ongoing limited overs series against Australia, the swashbuckling opener announced on Thursday.

Smith will return to lead the side against South Africa in an ODI series at the end of next month and coach Darren Lehmann echoed Smith’s sentiments. In this second ODI, James Faulkner finished with figures of 3-45. He became a consistent opener in 2009 and at present has 10,248 runs in 329 ODIs for Sri Lanka, with 22 centuries and 47 half-centuries.

Warner was penalised by the International Cricket Council for yelling at Indian opener Rohit Sharma during a one-day international at the MCG previous year. Kusal Mendis top scored with 69, backed up by aggressive 50s from captain Angelo Mathews and Kusal Perera.

Given the chance to bat up the order, he firmly established himself in that position and often gave Sri Lanka a flying start to innings.

Faulkner claimed Kusal Perera’s wicket on the last ball of the 46th over and then claimed angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera on the first and second ball of the 48th over, respectively.

Announcing the decision during the ongoing series with Australia, Dilshan confirmed he will play his final ODI at Dambulla on Sunday and his last T20 worldwide at Colombo on September 9, both against the ODI World Champions.

‘The schedule is very busy.

“There was a couple of games where I bowled three overs or four overs the whole game and there was one at the MCG (against Victoria) on a green seamer where I only bowled two”, Zampa added.

While calling on his side to continue to work hard, Smith said Australia need to find ways to have success in different conditions.

“I together with my committee wish to extent our honest appreciation and wish him the very best in his future endeavors”.

David Warner will take over the Australia captaincy in Sri Lanka for the rest of the tour.

And coach Darren Lehman says ” we would love to test David Warner in captaincy role as this opportunity will give him the experience of leading the team at global level.

Mitchell Starc (3-53) cleaned up the tail, but Australia lost any momentum they may have taken back out into the middle when Warner and Finch went cheaply. “Everyone has to adapt, and we’ve got [to remember] that everyone is human”.

There has been plenty of criticism of Australia's captain Steve Smith for departing the Sri Lanka tour early
