Stephen Curry converted a pair of driving hoops in the final 1:20 of the game, lifting the Golden State Warriors to an 89-83 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in a Christmas Day rematch of the NBA Finals on Friday.
After trailing 28-19 in the first quarter, the Golden State Warriors rallied to regain the lead 45-42 at halftime. Golden State had its lowest offensive total of the season but found a way to stay ahead on the scoreboard in another way.
Stephen Curry is playing the best basketball of his life and so are the Golden State Warriors.
“Every time we play another team that’s at the top of the league, we want to show up, play well and get a win”, Curry said.
Shooting guard Klay Thompson, who like Curry made only one 3-pointer, added 18 points for the Warriors, who opened a five-game homestand with four straight wins. The Warriors and Cavs met twice in the regular season a year ago, and they split games.
Perhaps the biggest conclusion we can draw is that small ball is greater than bully ball. They had their six-game winning streak snapped. “We were a little off offensively but if we can continue to do that, we’ll be fine”.
It’s a game that several Cleveland players said they’ve been looking forward to for some time. Kevin Love missed nearly all of the playoffs, and he’s been doing well this season as number two option on offense, averaging 17.5 points per game while grabbing 10.6 rebounds a night.
Cavs other than J.R. Smith were 1-of-22 from 3-point range. Andre Iguodala put away the Cavaliers with two free throws with 12.7 seconds left after having done yeoman’s work in taking the bulk of the defensive assignment on James.
“Tonight our defense was absolutely unbelievable for all 48 minutes”, Warriors center Andrew Bogut said. “We’re not going back to the Finals like, ‘Look at this, this is what they did.’ They’ve got 26 games that we can look at from this year”. They will finally meet on Christmas Day in a much anticipated rematch of last season’s Finals.
Cleveland was held down to 31.6 per cent shooting overall, or 30-of-95 field goals and 16.7 per cent three-point shooting, or 5-of-30 from behind the arc.
The Warriors are on pace to have the winningest record in National Basketball Association history, and Curry is on pace to break his own record from 3-point baskets in a season.
Leandro Barbosa also suffered a left shoulder sprain in the quarter and did not return. During their six-game streak, the Cavaliers – who’ve gone 18-2 against the West over their last 20 regular season matchups – have outscored their opponents by over two touchdowns per, holding foes to just over 40 percent shooting, including 30 percent from beyond the arc, dominating on the break, in the paint and on the boards. He missed all five of his 3-point attempts.

A win will be great for either team, of course, but, again, it will be just one win. Oklahoma City changed things up and played Anthony Morrow and Enes Kanter with Durant, Westbrook and Serge Ibaka for most of the fourth quarter. He came back and played the rest of the way with no complaints.
