SYDNEY-Australia’s economy added 26,100 new jobs in March, snapping a three-month drought in jobs growth with a figure that may put at bay interest rate cuts for now.

Latest Australian Bureau of Statistics labour market figures indicate an increase in Queensland’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate from 5.6 per cent in February to 6.1 per cent in March, with an additional 13,000 persons registered as unemployed during the month.

Anderson pointed to other signs of economic recovery.

The participation rate, which refers to the number of people either employed or actively looking for work, was steady at 64.9 per cent. In March, the average wage was $24.45 per hour for Oregon’s private sector payroll employees, which was 10 cents more than the $24.35 in February.

The state employment department says that more people working means higher wages. Total nonfarm employment hit a low of roughly 1.6 million in 2010.

“Our view is that underlying hiring demand has slowed in early 2016 but will be sufficient this year to maintain an unemployment rate within earshot of five per cent”.

March’s job gains were broad-based. The only losses were seen in education and health services. Construction, retail and financial services employers also grew.

The Portland metro area is sparking much of the growth, with about half the state’s employment coming from firms in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, according to Employment Department data.
