Grant had the best game of his collegiate career, returning a kickoff and a punt for late touchdowns.

Grant’s two kick return touchdowns, which nearly sealed the game for the Scarlet Knights, were just a bright spot on a cloudy day.

They went ahead 21-10 when Wilson surpassed 100 yards rushing with his second score 3:56 before the half. The 5-foot-10, 215-pounder possesses an impressive blend of power, speed and vision, with an ability to hit another gear when he gets to the second level.

When asked if he would prefer to carry the ball more, Martin was coy in his response. Gaskin would add a 16-yard touchdown run on the next Washington possession.

The one negative for this group has been fumbles. Gaskin scored on runs of three, 16 and 78 yards and Jake Browning passed for 326 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way for Washington (1-1).

Carroo didn’t slow down after that first catch.

Flanagan continues to be a red-zone threat. Gabe Marks now has 20 catches for 222 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

After sitting out the first half because of a curfew violation, Laviano and receiver Leonte Carroo put on the show in the third quarter against Norfolk State. Laviano had his most success on short passes to the tight ends off of rollouts.

Penalties and turnovers are victory killers. Ultimately, those self-inflicted wounds reflect back on the coach.

Rutgers (1-1) comes out of this game with a lot of lessons to learn. But it was just a little bit better.

Hogan got Stanford into the end zone for the first time this season on a 53-yard flea-flicker to Michael Rector in the second quarter.

“The defense, at times, did a good job of keeping the ball in front of them”, Flood said.

Washington State’s task was made easier when Turay jumped offside, and then Falk completed a 12-yard fourth-down pass as a precursor of execution to come. Moments later, Rutgers had its first touchdown.

Washington State’s Erik Powell hit field goals from 46- and 47-yards in the second quarter as Falk went 24-of-29 for 201-yards in the first half.

The opening week of the season certainly changed opinions about Rutgers and Washington State. Washington State should do more damage with five players who had at least 40 catches back from past year. Rutgers recorded one sack and four quarterback hurries. Falk rushed for 13 yards to the Rutgers 8-yard line, where he was sandwiched by Kiy Hester and Steve Longa.

There were two chop-blocking penalties involving right tackle J.J. Denman.

second-and-10 from the WSU 40: It looked like déjà vu when, with Rutgers driving, center Derrick Nelson was flagged for a chop block that pushed the ball back across midfield.

Leach said Falk doesn’t need to do so in order to prove himself a leader for the Cougars.

Chris Muller was called for a hold and Rutgers didn’t get much of a second chance as Hicks lost a fumble after catching a screen pass on the next play.
