Washington State defeats Miami

Miami receiver Rashawn Scott, left, and Washington States Charleston White battle for a pass intended for Scott during the first quarter of the Sun Bowl NCAA college football game Saturday Dec. 26, 2015 in El Paso, Texas. The game ended up 20-14 in favor of the dominant Cougars, and the Hurricanes had to deal with some conditions not typical to Florida, or Texas, for that matter. The 2015 Sun Bowl was the first win of the Mike Leach era and the first for Washington State since 2003.

It will still be unseasonably warm, and there is the potential for strong storms with that frontal passage. Through 1 p.m., Washington, D.C. had already reached 70 degrees , passing the record high of 69 from 1933.

“At the end of the day, there’s no moral victories”, said interim coach Larry Scott, who will be replaced by Mark Richt.

Late in the game, a reverse pass attempt by Miami Running Back Joseph Yearby would turn out to be costly for the Hurricanes. The two turnovers in the red zone was just huge.

Two plays later, with Walton seemingly headed toward the end zone, the sophomore fumbled. “We knew it was going to be there, we knew we had to do a great job of setting it up and we called it at the right time”, Scott said of the Yearby pass. “The ball slipped out of his hands”. He threw touchdown passes of 31 yards to running back Jamal Morrow and 25 yards to receiver Gabe Marks.

“It’s a play that we carried into the game”. “There was enough snow that it obstructed vision, windy enough that it obstructed balls and slippery enough that when you bring out one or two of those foot scraper things you turn out needing 11 of them….” While the pounding snow and slippery field surface doubtlessly made things harder for the offense, its inability to provide any extra cushion over the final two quarters gave the Hurricanes chances to take the lead late in the game. Defensive back Peyton Pelluer picked off Kaaya’s pass inside the Cougars’ 15-yard line and Washington State took advantage of a poor punt and two Miami personal fouls in the final minute of the first half to extend its lead.

The offense began to click as Kaaya seemed to find his rhythm and Scott began making plays. On the next play, quarterback Brad Kaaya threw left to Coley for a TD that could’ve given the Hurricanes the lead, but it was called back for a block-in-the-back penalty.

Kaaya was 17 of 30 for 219 yards with one interception.

“All season long, it’s just been finish strong, finish strong and I think we did that in the second half”, Kaaya said. On the next series, the Cougars used a 14-play drive to get Powell’s first field goal and a 10-7 lead. Washington State fumbled in the second quarter, but the defense forced a three-and-out.

Bryant Shirreffs completed 10 of 17 passes for 86 yards and gained 75 yards on 19 carries for CT (6-7), which came up short in a bid to have a winning record for the first time since 2010.

But it wasn’t the snow or even the Washington State high-powered offense that doomed Miami.
