But after a day of frantic searching local law enforcement were able to detain the 20-year-old suspect and bring him into custody. “Stay close to your friends and loved ones as we await more information and, hopefully, news of the suspect’s capture”, Inslee said in a statement. The authorities do not yet know the suspect’s motivation, he said. A news conference was set for Saturday night.
His motive was unknown.
The shooter – described as a Hispanic man in his late teens or early 20s – later left the store on foot, triggering an intense manhunt.
Her mother Evangelina Lara said she had survived cancer and was a happy student, according to The Seattle Times.
Stephanie Bose, an assistant general manager at Johnny Carino’s Italian restaurant near Macy’s department store at the mall, told The Associated Press she immediately locked the doors to the restaurant after hearing about the shooting from an employee’s boyfriend.
After the shots stopped, Zavala went back into the Macy’s to search for his wife.
Lara’s family was informed of her death at 2:00 a.m. Saturday.
Police say 5 people were killed after a shooter opened fire inside a Macy’s at a shopping mall in Burlington, Washington on Friday evening.
The man’s identity and other details about the arrest were not immediately available. A news conference was set for Saturday night.
The FBI said on Twitter that it is assisting with intelligence review and manpower and adds that it “has no information to suggest additional attacks planned in WA state”.
The Rev. Cody Natland lit five candles on a table in front of the church, one for each victim. The victims’ identities have not been released.
Noel Cuevas says he was eating dinner with his family at a Washington state mall when a gunman opened fire, killing five people.
The 39-year-old Cuevas later returned to Cascade Mall in Burlington, Washington, to retrieve his truck parked near a cordoned off area.
For much of Saturday, authorities searched the mall for evidence.
Investigators said footage showed that Cetin initially walked into the mall unarmed. They escorted shoppers and workers who had sheltered in place outside.
“You’d think it would happen in Everett or Seattle, but a small town of Burlington, I’d never dream something like this would happen”.
“I’m a little nervous even taking her to her soccer game today with this person still on the loose”, she said of her 7-year-old daughter. The identity of the man who was fatally shot was also withheld.
Lt Chris Cammock of Mount Vernon Police Department said Cetin, who is expected to appear in court on Monday, was from Turkey but a “legal, permanent resident of the United States”.
Police spokesman Sgt. Mark Francis told reporters that the man was armed with a “long gun, a rifle-type gun”.
“When he exited the scene, I can’t speak to routes and things like that right now”, Lieutenant Cammock said.
Eleven search teams and two K-9 teams spent several hours clearing and securing the mall.
The gunman remained at large. As of Saturday morning local time, the bodies remained at the store, said the Skagit County coroner, Hayley Thompson.
Four females and one male were slain at Cascade Mall on Friday evening in Burlington, Washington.
