Watch Amy Adams Communicate With Aliens in the Trailer for Arrival
On its surface, the movie clearly has the aspects of alien invasion movies we’ve come to expect: 12 mysterious UFOs dubbed “Shells” have landed all across the world, bodies are being wheeled away from their landing sites, and the proverbial “canary in the coal mine” is on display in earnest.

If an alien species were to visit Earth with mysterious intentions, it just makes sense that we’d send Amy Adams to represent humankind.
It seems the proper way to handle this global incident has pitted puny humans against one another, so much so that Russian Federation executed their own intelligence officer to keep secrets and that World War III might break out at any moment.
“We need to make sure that they understand the difference between a weapon and a tool”, Banks explains.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario), the film is based on Ted Chiang’s 1998 novella Story of Your Life with a script with Eric Heisserer (The Thing (2011)). Let us know as we’d love to hear from you. Now the studio has released the first official trailer for the film, offering a better look at the project. It also seems like the ideal opportunity to make linguists cool somehow.

Arrival will premiere at TIFF this year before coming to theaters on November 11. Amy Adams plays expert linguist Dr. Louise Banks and is tasked with trying to communicate with the aliens to prevent a worldwide attack that would wipe out the human race. But with violence escalating around the world, and time running out, she takes a chance that could threaten her life, and possibly all of humanity.
