The Vice President of the United States called for a change of culture that would prevent survivors of rape for feeling in some way to blame before introducing Lady Gaga as “my friend and a courageous lady herself”. The song touches on an extremely personal topic for Gaga, who’s spoken in the past about being sexually assaulted by a record producer at the age of 19.
The survivors made their way to the stage halfway through Gaga’s performance with messages like “survivor”, “it’s not your fault”, “we believe you” and “unbreakable”, scribbled on their wrists. As the song that she and Diane Warren wrote was winding down, dozens of survivors of sexual assault joined her on stage.
Despite the outpouring of support for Gaga and “Til It Happens To You”, the Best Original Song Oscar went to Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith for “Writing’s On the Wall” from “Spectre”. Is he the flawless spokesperson against sexual assault?
On Sunday, Lady Gaga delivered an intense performance of “Til It Happens to You”, which was introduced by Vice President Joe Biden, who told the crowd, “Tonight, I’m asking you to join millions of Americans … to take the pledge”. “She said, ‘I want all of you to look into that camera and I want you to hurt.’…”
Kesha argues that Dr. Luke threatened her into denying allegations of rape during the deposition in question.
In case you needed more reasons to love Larson, later in the night she celebrated her Oscars win by throwing on her Chucks and grabbing a burger, because she is basically ideal.
Kesha is vigorously attempting to break her six-album recording contract with Sony because she claims the deal put her in contact with her alleged rapist, whose real name is Luke Gottwald.
