Ilkay Gundogan was anxious that his dislocated kneecap might have derailed his move to Manchester City.
But his mind was set at rest by a phone call from new manager Pep Guardiola, who asked for details of how he picked up the injury after it was revealed he had been playing basketball at the time. “At the end, we will see what is our level to achieve our prizes, our titles”. He’s going to prep the young players and we’re going to improve.
“One of my dreams would have been to play here like a football player, it was not possible and now my dream has come true”, he said.
Finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, Guardiola has already begun to revamp the City squad with two high-profile signings in the form of Ikay Gundogan and Noliton. It is my first time outside Germany so it will be a big adventure for me.
“That’s maybe the reason why at the end some of them, because they don’t play, they hate me, so that is what it is”.
Since beginning his managerial career in 2007 with Barcelona, Guardiola has captured fans and players alike with his possession-based football.
Their struggles allowed Leicester City to rock the footballing world and become champions – a remarkable achievement which seems even more unlikely in La Liga due to Real Madrid and Barcelona’s dominance.
“I wasn’t anxious”, Guardiola said of City’s close call with Champions League qualification.

Yet the 45-year-old former Bayern Munich manager claims he could have been associated with City sooner had he accepted a short-term contract from Pearce in 2005.
