Watch Bruce Springsteen cap off Jon Stewart’s heartfelt Daily Show farewell

However, as another Twitter user said: “Jon Stewart’s last episode of The Daily Show watched by 0 people in NZ – thanks @SKYNZ @comedycentralnz for you fail” [sic]. And it only got better from there.

The debate had enormous ratings locally, but somehow I doubt many Stewart fans missed the start of his show for the final speeches by the Republicans Stewart normally would have blasted on Monday, if he still had a show.

Hillary Clinton bemoaned Stewart leaving “just when I’m running for president”.

He got a little help from his former correspondent and fellow Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert. But as last night’s farewell proved, host Trevor Noah will have big shoes to fill, shoes that contained Jon Stewart’s harry Hobbit toes. Colbert, speaking on behalf of all Daily Show correspondents, then hijacked the segment with an unscripted tribute to the host that left Stewart fighting back tears.

Many television network bosses would like to speak with Stewart about possible roles, if not a daily show, maybe a weekly or monthly one.

Stewart has hosted the Daily Show for more than a decade and a half, interviewing some of the world’s most prominent leaders, scientists, academics, and celebrities. AGoodfellas-inspired sketch highlighted the crew, and featured the film’s director, Martin Scorsese, warning Stewart, “You’ve ripped me off for the last time”.

The Daily Show may be born to run, but for Stewart it was time to finally bid farewell.
