Watch Hillary Clinton mock herself for not supporting LGBT rights sooner

It was a pretty good one, actually, in that Hillary way: Awkward, halting, but still efficient and vaguely indicative of a little bit more prominent of a amusing bone in private than we ever see in public. The whole sketch hinged on how unhinged Jones could get – and she seemed really comfortable delivering the insane.

In the traditional style of SNL, “Hillary” has a vision of chatting up her bartender Val – who is in fact played by the real Hillary Clinton. With her first marijuana joke out of the way about 30 seconds in, she then picked up the microphone to say goodbye to the summer by singing “My Way” while cast members impersonated all the awful people who were in the news since SNL signed off last season.

Last night, it was Hillary Clinton’s turn.

“Oh, Val, I’m just so darn bummed”, McKinnon says to Clinton.

At one point in the sketch, Bill Clinton played by Darrell Hammond dropped by the bar and tried to buy a drink before shouting, “they’re multiplying!” and fleeing the bar.

On Sunday’s Today show, Kristen Welker flat-out declared this a success: “For her part, Hillary Clinton has been rebounding from the e-mail situation”.

Asked what she does for a living, McKinnon says in imitation of Clinton’s earnest monotone: “First, I am a grandmother”. Clinton broke her silence on the issue and announced her opposition to the controversial project only a few weeks ago. Co-host Charlie Rose said that Clinton did “well” on Saturday Night Live. It was everything the campaign needed it to be, and showed brief signs of realness that Clinton must tap into. This time, Cyrus placed pictures of her actual “Dead Petz” on her piano as she played along. She also avoided any allusion to the economic populism that has fueled her main challenger for the Democratic nomination, Sen.

DAN HARRIS: Yeah. And those poll numbers dropping and Bernie Sanders raising a lot of money.

And there was no mention of Vice President Joe Biden, on a weekend when there is more speculation about his possible entry into the race. Many have said it’s because he’s so human – so relatable. Clinton is set to testify in front of a Benghazi committee in two weeks, and pressure regarding her email server continues to mount. Badly. And without a total command of the lyrics.
