Watch John Terry’s emotional speech to fans: ‘I want to stay’

Guus Hiddink is hopeful John Terry will reach an agreement with Chelsea to remain at the club beyond this season.

“It’s good to have big players in a club who are big personalities”, Hiddink said.

“Chelsea is my life, just like it is yours and you’ve been a big part of the best moments of my life. The contract extension the club has offered me is a different role, and I hope everyone will understand I want to take the time to consider it carefully before making a decision”. I’ll be speaking to the club over the next few days.

Terry, who was thrown aloft by his team-mates on a lap of appreciation following the match and his speech, said: “We all want the same thing”.

Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri – the manager who helped establish Terry as a first-team regular during his spell at Stamford Bridge – paid tribute to his former captain after the match. “I’m glad Leicester have won it and I’m glad Tottenham haven’t”. “I want to stay”. Thousands of fans have even signed a petition, asking the club to give him the new deal he “deserves”.

Ranieri and his players were welcomed onto the pitch with a guard of honour from the deposed champions, with the Italian – Chelsea manager between 2000 and 2004 – clearly emotional as he was applauded by the home faithful.

Leicester City’s championship-winning campaign comes to an end on Sunday when the club travels south to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. I have full confidence they will go up now in this period, make their analysis and strategy and go where they belong: “fighting for silverware and being in the top four”. You stuck through us, as supporters, through thick and thin. It was good but I was not so happy, and maybe when I changed and we went back to 4-4-2 we played immediately better, we pressed high and it was much better for us.

Yesterday’s draw, during which England hopeful Danny Drinkwater cancelled out a Cesc Fabregas penalty inside the final 10 minutes, coupled with Stoke’s victory over West Ham, saw Chelsea finish 10th, 31 points adrift of the Foxes.

“But not that dramatic because I think I will be back, not very soon, but every now and then”, Hiddink said.
