The narrative aims to demonstrate the power of connection and thoughtfulness at Christmas.

It follows the touching story of a girl who sees a man on the moon through her telescope. She decides to write to him, but can’t get the message there, trying arrows and paper airplanes before she finally discovers a solution.

The Oasis song and theme tune to sitcom The Royal Family, Half the World Away, soundtracks the advert. But it’s covered by a female vocalist, 19-year-old Norwegian singer Aurora Aksnes. The advert itself cost £1 million ($1.5 million) to make and the retailer has spent £7 million ($10.6 million) in total on its Christmas campaign, according to the Guardian newspaper.

“Our Christmas advert is once again all about going the extra mile to give someone the ideal gift”, John Lewis customer director Craig Inglis said.

The John Lewis advert this year comprises of a short film called Man on the Moon, focusing on the isolation of millions of pensioners during the festive period.

The highstreet retailer, famed for its heartwarming Xmas ads every year, has revealed a few exciting details of its latest advertisement which is set to take the country by storm this holiday season.

Released on social media this morning, the advert will have its TV debut during Channel 4’s Gogglebox tonight.

The advert, entitled “Man On The Moon”, features a young girl, Lily, who spots through her telescope a lonely man sitting on a bench on the moon. There will be moon-themed events at John Lewis stores, and there’s a Man on The Moon app that includes a 3D interactive moon, games and “moon facts”.
