Police found a second possible explosive device, believed to be a pressure cooker, blocks from the site of Saturday night’s explosion in Chelsea.
Hours earlier, a pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, N.J., and forced the cancellation of a 5K charity run there.
Cuomo says the injured have been released from the hospital. Most of the injuries were minor. Police said surveillance video recovered from West 23rd Street shows the explosion, and contains other evidence that indicates to investigators that the original object was intentionally left next to a construction trash container.
“We don’t understand the target or the significance of it”, said an official speaking on condition of anonymity, the New York Times reported. Four sources said the device was a pressure cooker and that it had what appeared to be wires coming from it, a cell phone and black tape. Witnesses said the explosion blew out the windows of businesses and scattered debris in the area.
The exact cause of the blast was not immediately determined, O’Neill told reporters. The race was cancelled and no injuries were reported.
