The victor will play either Ana Konjuh or Karolina Pliskova in the semi-final stages.
Despite her dearth of Grand Slam success, Pliskova is playing with confidence after winning her biggest title to date on the hard courts of Cincinnati. All that stood in the way of her playing for the U.S. Open was the lightly regarded Italian player. She also controlled Halep on the returns, finishing with three breakers in seven break point opportunities. Plishkova, the No. 10 seed, defeated Venus Williams in three sets in the fourth round. “Today on the court, you know, she found her rhythm and took the opportunities that I gave her”, Konjuh said in the post-match press conference.

Williams is chasing history but she looked like she might be chased out of the Open after looking frustrated in the marathon second set but ultimately her service was too strong. “I think everyone here knows I can play better”. If Pliskova can continue to drop down aces and spray winners with her power, she’ll have a shot to pull off the upset and advance to the US Open final. It made a certain degree of sense that the last of the US Open quarterfinals would be a grudging, grueling affair.

The world No.1 was also unsuccessful in the doubles, dropping out in the first round alongside her sister Venus having won gold at Sydney, Beijing and London in the past.
“I always believe in myself no matter what my ranking”, said Wozniacki after surging past a hobbled Anastasija Sevastova 6-0, 6-2 in the quarters.
Kerber says her fellow German “got rid of my doubts”.
“She’s, like, the best player in the world”. “Of course, this Grand Slam is very unique for me: I never experienced something like this – to have three retirements on the road to the semifinals”.

Though Halep lost the set, she had put a chink in Williams’ armor, even with Williams closing out the frame with a forehand volley victor for the break. Halep held multiple set points, only to watch Williams hit another victor to erase them and send things back to deuce. Neither has Pliskova, who had not even been past the third round at major until now.
