Water cooler: Debating the Emmy nominations

Cable, Pay, and Streaming TV shows continue their dominant march over broadcast television with this year’s Emmy Award nominations. Better Call Saul, Mr. Robot, Homeland, House of Cards, The Americans, are all competing with “Downton Abbey”, which is in its final season.

Aziz Ansari received a lead comedy acting bid for his series “Master of None”, a first for an Indian-American actor, and the show received a best comedy series nomination. ABC’s “black-ish”, which brought the African-American family comedy back to network TV and with a sharply relevant edge, received a best comedy nod and recognition for its stars, Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus will go for her fifth best comedy actress title for playing Selina Meyer on “Veep”, while last year’s victor Jeffrey Tambor was once again nominated for best comedy actor for his role as a transgender college professor in “Transparent“.

Kerry Washington, who portrayed Hill in Confirmation, and Audra McDonald, who played Billie Holiday in HBO’s Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, were nominated for lead actress in a limited series or movie.

Netflix’s first monster hit, “House of Cards“, picked up a slew of nominations, as did docu-series standout “Making a Murderer“, and comedies “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Master of None”.

The Emmy nominations shone brightly on Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the television neophytes whose series – “The People v. O.J Simpson: American Crime Story” – scored 22 nods from the Academy.

Game of Thrones topped the field of Emmy contenders with 23 nominations overall, including nods for best drama series, two for best supporting actor and three for best supporting actress. Once again, it was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, an award which it won a year ago. The basic cable network made Emmy history today when its various series notched up a total of 56 Primetime Emmy Award nominations – the highest total nominations for a basic cable network in Emmy history.

However, with several of its most beloved shows now retired (Mad Men, Parks and Recreation) or on a break (Louie), this year’s nominations have thrown up a few new faces to go alongside all the regular ones. It was also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series in 2015. So tell me how many Academy members watched enough of them – let alone hundreds and hundreds of hours of reality shows, documentaries and news programs – to make truly informed decisions? “I wish I could work with him on everything”.
