Water pipe breaks creating sinkhole that swallows cars
Some residents on Madison’s east side likely had a sinking feeling early Friday morning when they saw their vehicles submerged in a sinkhole.

Authorities tell NBC15 that residents in nearby apartments were evacuated because of concerns about a possible gas leak.
Water mains have been shut off in the area, but crews are now concerned about gas line breaks. Madison Fire Department spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster says emergency personnel were called to the River’s Edge Apartments shortly before 5 a.m. Friday.
Fordem Avenue will be closed between the intersection of Sherman Avenue and Johnson Street in the inbound direction.
The Red Cross is at the scene bringing in water, coffee and food for people who’ve been evacuated. The water main was privately owned by the apartment complex and will be fixed by a private contractor.

It’s not known at this time how long this closure will last.
