Waterspout damages truck near Skyway Bridge in Tampa

A semi-truck was twice flipped over after a funnel cloud touched down on a Florida bridge.

Mail was scattered over land and water when a U.S. Postal Service tractor-trailer was struck by a tornado on the northbound Sunshine Skyway Bridge approach Sunday morning.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the truck’s driver – Randall J. Leaver, 56 – emerged unscathed, but the vehicle was badly damaged.

A video of the incident went viral. The waterspout footage shows aftermath of a tornado which crossed the path of a large mail truck in Florida. The truck was then flipped a second time due to the strength of the storm. Mail flew away and the truck was damaged, but Leaver eventually walked away uninjured.

A waterspout is a tornado that occurs over water.

WFLA Meteorologist Bryan Bennett confirmed that the waterspout near the bridge appeared at about 9:50 a.m. The waterspout overturned a small boat, damaged a construction site, and flattened signs.

The narrow bridge measure 21,000 feet long and has a cable-stayed main span.
