Afterward, Kerber thought back to her greatest weakness when she was a teenager aspiring to Grand Slam titles and No. 1 rankings: “My fitness was the worst”, she said, laughing.
Kerber’s loss of the second set was the first time the entire championship that she had dropped a set. Pliskova slipped back into that comfort zone that has enveloped her this fortnight.
“I’m so proud of myself”, she said of her performance at Flushing Meadows – both over the last two weeks and in the final. She explained that her confidence came from knowing exactly what will happen after the final, win or lose, so she could just go out there and play.
Karolina Pliskova suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Angelique Kerber in the US Open women’s singles final on Saturday, but the Czech 10th seed also proved her mettle as one of the most unsafe attacking players in women’s tennis.
Never a Grand Slam finalist before 2016, Kerber beat Williams for the Australian Open title in January, then was runnerup to her at Wimbledon.
The towering Pliskova advanced with pride, wiping out the Williams Sisters on her way to a first-ever major final appearance.
Karolina Pliskova has taken the second set of the U.S. Open final against Angelique Kerber, sending the match to a third.
Having saved the first break point she faced in the second set, but unable to make inroads on Pliskova’s serve, Kerber was beginning to look demoralized by the power shots coming her way.
“I think I’m ready to have this pressure on my shoulders”, Kerber said. “I don’t believe it”, said Pliskova, who had never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam in 17 prior attempts.
She was four for five on break-point opportunities, overall.
Angelique Kerber, of Germany, poses with the championship trophy the day after winning the women’s singles final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, in NY. I am at the top, number one.
Following her US Open triumph, new World No.1 Angelique Kerber has taken a post-win media tour across the Atlantic from NY to Germany. Pliskova then won the next service game to take a 5-3 lead in the set, before failing to break Kerber and allowing her to trim it to 5-4. Kerber talked about one turning point in the third set, a devastating forehand victor, which she powered down the line at 30-30 in the seventh game of the third set. As a player advancing to her first three Grand Slam finals appearances in one year, Kerber reaches another milestone that has remained untouched for almost twenty years in the WTA tour since Martina Hingis did it in 1997. Li Na, who won the 2011 French Open at 29 and, three years later, the Australian Open.
“It still sounds a little bit insane”, Kerber said a few hours later, the U.S. Open trophy by her side.
“We all know that the last game wasn’t great, but it’s so hard against her”, Pliskova said.

Pliskova beat Kerber in the final at Cincinnati almost three weeks ago for a breakthrough title for the 24-year-old Czech, and she’s been riding that momentum ever since. “But I think that’s also her strength”. Djokovic and No. 2 ranked Andy Murray were considered the top two favorites to win the title, but Japan’s Kei Nishikori outsmarted Murray on the court in an impressive upset quarterfinal victory. The duo only teamed up late a year ago.
