Djokovic regained the upper hand, as he so often does, reaching his 21st Grand Slam final and seventh at the U.S. Open with an eventful and, at times, weird 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Monfils on Friday.

Djokovic had become the first player to reach a grand slam semifinal benefiting from three retirements and/or walkovers, which he said helped him as he tries to recover from arm, wrist and shoulder injuries. But Nishikori fought back and broke Wawrinka later in the set to put the players back on serve and cut the deficit to 3-2. But at the outset of this final, it was Kerber who was in charge.

Djokovic has won 19 of 23 previous meetings, but Wawrinka did win their 2015 French Open final for his second Grand Slam title. “I mean, all the dreams came true this year”.
