The newly-awarded Rooney was unable to play the match against Estonia due to injury.

However, Sky sources understand the forward is likely to be fit for United’s trip to Merseyside at the weekend, which will come as a boost for manager Louis van Gaal.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the United captain and England midfielder have returned to Manchester after missing the European championship against Estonia.

Meanwhile, Ander Herrera has missed United’s last two games with a muscle problem but is now back in training and on course to be in the squad for the Everton fixture, while Rojo could win a place at left full back given United’s recent problems there following his recovery from issues of his own. However, his leadership qualities could be vital for United and Van Gaal against Everton.

Following the Everton clash, the Red Devils face CSKA Moscow in the Champions League before a tricky derby with Manchester City next weekend. Rooney’s return to fitness will only give the Dutchman more options.

He’s also scored twice for England, seeing him overtake Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time record and set a new benchmark of 50 goals for the Three Lions.

Hodgson is quoted as saying by Metro: “From his (Carrick’s) point of view, and United’s, the rest will do him good, ‘ said Hodgson”.

However, Bastian Schweinsteiger missed Germany’s defeat to Ireland on Thursday with a thigh injury.

There were concerns that the 29-year-old may struggle to recover in time to face Everton this coming weekend, however, the Daily Mail claim that Rooney is now expected to shake-off the injury and make the trip to Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.
