Wayne Rooney: “I know I haven’t played well”

After going down 1-0 to Club Brugge in their Champions League playoff qualifier-a game which marks United’s return to Europe’s biggest stage after a season-long absence-Memphis scored two just before halftime to soothe the nerves of the home fans.

He added: “I’m an honest guy”.

United carried a lot of momentum heading into the match after winning their first two Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa. I know that. I thought I had a good game [on Tuesday], could have had a goal or two, but that’s football.

“It’s important that we all chip in“.

“I have confidence in him and tonight he scored two goals and the assist for the third goal was a fantastic cross from him, so I am very happy”, said Van Gaal of the 21-year-old Depay, one of United’s summer signings. Depay flicked the ball over the defender and made some room to shoot to get his first goal for United.

The 29-year-old hopes that his improved display against Club Brugge signals a change in fortune.

Rooney has played in three Champions League finals, winning one, in 2008, and scoring in defeat against Barcelona in 2011, and after a season out of the tournament, he was delighted to hear the competition’s theme music once again.

He’s stated that he’s gone through similar spells already in his career and is confident that he will come out the other side.

“I understand I have to be the one who’s going to lead that line for us and try and find the goals for us.” “I lost the ball too easily and I’m aware of that”, he said.

Manchester United were holding out for a hero, last night, and Memphis stepped forward.

“We created a lot of chances, but I must admit I’m a bit disappointed because I could have got a hat-trick”.

Bastian Schweinsteiger came on at half-time against Brugge and you could see the momentum of the game change in the second half in United’s favour. Hill feels that Pedro doesn’t fit the profile of what the Red Devils need, and has identified the player they should sign.

In a very lively game, Manchester United went behind after just eight minutes when Michael Carrick turned Victor Vazquez’s free kick into his own net, before Depay equalized five minutes later.

Depay has got his goal tally for the season off the mark, with an impressive performance against Club Bruges earlier this week.

Finally it is van Gaal's Manchester United
