The 66-year-old goalkeeping legend added that he is not concerned about Rooney closing in on his record for England, but feels the national team are carrying their captain, who he believes should have retired from worldwide football after the disastrous European Championship.

Former England captain and still the country’s record cap holder Peter Shilton believes Wayne Rooney should have retired from national team duty after Euro 2016.
Wayne Rooney said he’s focused on England’s next game, not on the prospect of becoming England’s most capped outfield player.
But precious Pete feels Rooney should already have called time on his own impressive England career and told BBC Scotland: “I don’t think he’s a striker any more”.
“I don’t think he’s a striker anymore”.
Rooney is also England’s leading goalscorer, with 53 goals.
“I thought he should have retired after the Euros”.
Rooney made his 116th global appearance on Sunday as England marked Sam Allardyce’s first match as national team manager with a last-gasp 1-0 win away to Slovakia, secured by Adam Lallana’s injury-time goal in a 2018 World Cup qualifier away to Slovakia. Far from it. If he does and he plays well, fine’.
And Allardyce’s comments after the 1-0 win away in Slovakia on Sunday suggest that the 30-year-old will be a permanent fixture in the side for the next two years.

Shilton, who won 125 caps, said: “He’s not a midfield player”.
