‘Wayne Rooney shouldn’t make England starting XI’

Roy Hodgson believes England have it within themselves to win Euro 2016.

Former England global Matt Le Tissier has said that he believes Wayne Rooney does not warrant a starting place at Euro 2016 on this season’s form.

Le Tissier, one of Soccer Saturday’s panel of wise men on Sky Sports every week, said: “Does Wayne Rooney get in my England team right now?”

“The spell he’s been out now is starting to be a little bit extended and you have to wonder what form he will be in”.

“And although England sometimes struggled to get the best out of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard when they played in the same side, I would definitely play Alli and Ross Barkley together, 100 per cent. That would be really exciting to watch”.

According to the Sun, Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has returned to light training and could be fit for the upcoming clash with Everton.

Of course, it is perfectly feasible Hodgson could opt to experiment with two up front in these matches and pair Kane with Jamie Vardy of Leicester City, second in the Premier League scoring charts with 19 goals, but the Tottenham forward starts as favourite to be given first crack at the lone frontman role having excelled as a single striker at his club. I like the fact we’ve got some talented forwards in good form this season. As manager of the national side Roy’s probably looking at that and that will help Alli’s case.

“He should be back after the global break”.

England’s squad this season will feature a number of young stars who have set the Premier League on fire. The two friendlies coming up are against good opposition.

“They deserve to be in the team and deserve their chance”.

“I am not going there to wash people’s boots and clean the kit”.

Hurst, in an interview with talkSPORT, added: “I won my first cap just a few months before the final, Martin Peters didn’t play his first game until the May and ended up scoring in the final so you never know what can happen in these months leading up to the Euros”. Obviously I missed the last trip. “I’d like to see them have a real go at these teams”. If Rooney can play himself into some form for United between now and the end of the season, he could yet be handed a role playing off Kane as a supporting figure, but probably not as the main figure up front.

“I hope the press don’t put too much pressure on them and hopefully they do well”.
