Wayne Rooney: ‘Win over Liverpool is all that matters’

“We have to continue, which is not so easy, but we can do it”.

“Wazza [Rooney] has shown that [ability to bounce back] throughout his career and it’s good to see he is among the goals again”.

I think everyone knows the importance of this game regardless of positions; we could be top or second from bottom. We started 2016 very good, with a lot of wins and a draw, and we didn’t lose.

“In the first-half we didn’t keep the ball and we have survived the first-half.

Liverpool made it tough for us in the first half but we got the chance and we are happy with the win”.

“When I see this game then I think we can still improve but it was good enough to win at Liverpool away”.

David de Gea denied the Reds on several occasions, saving from Adam Lallana and twice from Emre Can and was named man-of-the-match by broadcasters Sky Sports. Rooney was 18 when former Manchester United legend manager Sir Alex Ferguson signed him.

Asked if United were still in the title race, the Dutchman told a news conference: “It is seven points and seven points we can overcome that”.

The manager acknowledged that Liverpool’s familiar inability to deal with balls into the penalty area had also played its part.

Jurgen Klopp admitted that Liverpool had been punished for being wasteful after their 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester United.

“Rooney was at the back on his own to score his goal and it’s very frustrating”. “Today it was important because our competitors lost points and when the gap is like this we can overturn that”. “It’s a massive victory for us”.

A report in Tuesday’s edition of SportsMail states that the United players were “shouting and screaming at each other so loudly that the Liverpool players could hear them from their own dressing room”.

“De Gea played exceptionally well and was key in keeping them in the game, and when you have a world-class player like Rooney, something can happen, and it did”.

“We needed to be strong physically and had a great spirit, we fought very hard but couldn’t take our chances”.

“The goal was to defend and we didn’t do it”, Klopp added.

But for the second time in a matter of days Arsenal were left to reflect on whether they had gained a point or in fact dropped two after a thrilling midweek 3-3 draw with Liverpool.
