‘We need zero new HIV infections’

The southern African country will, from April 2016, extend antiretroviral therapy (ART) eligibility to all HIV-positive persons through “Test and Treat” strategy which was adopted last September.

In his remarks, the Lord Mayor of Banjul, Abdoulie Bah, said: “We are aware that an estimated 33 million people are living with HIV and around half of all infected people become infected with HIV before they are 25”. Georgia ranks second in the country for the diagnosis of new HIV infections, and Atlanta ranks fifth among similar metropolitan areas in the country for new diagnoses.

December 1 is observed as World Aids Day every year to mark the presence of one of the most dreaded disease in the World. World AIDS Day is one of the eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, and others.

Brazil has seen an overall decline in the number of people with HIV, but the number had risen sharply between 2012 and 2013, sparking concerns the virus was not being adequately tackled.

The event focused on teaching young people about preventing HIV and ending stigmas associated with the disease, and it can be a tough topic to talk about.

HIV is not the same as AIDS.

“You can not take anyone’s word for them being disease or HIV free”. Most Allegheny County cases still occur in men who have sex with men, but “we’re seeing infections across the board in a diverse population”, he said. The Health Department does free HIV testing Monday through Thursday.

“What I say is having HIV is not going to end your life, but it is going to change it”, he said. It’s not the frightful – well it’s a plague, but it’s not the terrible death sentence that it was in the 80s.
