On 13 June, the Bombay High Court cleared the release of Udta Punjab, whose makers were locked in a dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
However, the vacation bench said that it could consider the plea only after the petition by the NGO was numbered by the court’s registry.

“Yes, when the whole thing came out we at Phantom Films and Balaji Motion Pictures did not speak on the matter”.
Mumbai: Filmmaker Kabir Khan says the Bombay High Court’s verdict clearing Udta Punjab will encourage directors but feels it is about time the government takes the film industry seriously.
As per the Bombay High Court’s orders, the Central Board Of Film Certification has finally granted an Adult (A) certificate to the movie and now, we are all set to catch it in the theatres.
“I did this film because it is related to Punjab and it’s a very good story”.
On Wednesday afternoon, it emerged that the Abhishek Chaubey directorial – which has been in news for the makers’ run-in with the censor board – was available on torrent sites for illegal download. The film has been passed with “1” cut and “A” certificate by CBFC. It was slated to release on this Friday in theatres across the nation.
The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab has also said that it has no objection to the release of the film, adding that the people will decide the fate of the Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhat starrer.
Originally the censor board ordered over 30 cuts to the film before it would clear it for release. It is scheduled to release on June 17 with one cut and A certificate.
“I don’t like the High Court’s decision”.

The court said, “It is undisputed that the CBFC possesses powers to call for cuts, changes, deletions in a movie while certifying it”.
