At 5:14 p.m. Monday, Virginia State Police Trooper J.T. Glasscock was called to a crash in the southbound lanes of Route 288 near Lucks Lane. At this time, the Fauquier fatality is the only reported traffic death. More information will be released once it’s available.
State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the pedestrian’s body was thrown by the impact of the vehicle and hit a firefighter who was on the scene responding to the initial crash.
In Frederick County, the driver of a tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries when the rig overturned on Interstate 81 near the I-66 interchange.
Police are asking motorists to stay off the highways as roads are treacherous as freezing rain coats the region. The state trooper and other pedestrian were transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Letender died at the scene.
The road, which had been plowed, was slick, which is under investigation. The operator of the backhoe was not injured.
