The Twin Ports is expected to get around 1 to 3 inches Thursday night. Chicago’s O’Hare worldwide was the airport most affected, with five percent of its outbound flights canceled on Wednesday and 13 percent delayed.
See the current weather forecast here. High wind warning or advisory, from 9 p.m.to 6 a.m. Thursday, was issued for much of Iowa.
Forecasters say a strong storm system is targeting the Midwest and could cause tornadoes and blizzards in 12 states. Broken line of thunderstorms developing from Des Moines to Kansas City later this afternoon will be caught by the steering winds aloft and race eastward as high as 50 miles per hour. “The main threat is still damaging winds but with that possibility of an isolated tornado or two”.
A few reports were made about damage to a few buildings in the Adams County area of Iowa, but authorities were still trying to gather more information.
Blizzard conditions were expected in parts of Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska, the National Weather Service said. Weather officials eventually downgraded the threat and issued various severe weather warnings for south-central Iowa and northern Missouri.
The Nebraska State Patrol also reported minor accidents, where vehicles slid off icy roadways.
Alan Salyards said truckers coming through his Flying J Travel Plaza near Big Springs on the Nebraska-Colorado border, didn’t seem especially concerned. He said plow trucks were working all morning to keep the roads passable.
“With the weather alerts, that’s the only thing you can really listen to”, Lose said. No major delays were reported.
