Almost 20 members of the Civil Air Patrol are cleaning up the damage at Mettetal Airport along Lilley Road, which is now closed. To be considered severe, winds must be 58 miles per hour, or hail must be quarter sized.
No one was injured, but many volunteers are working this Christmas Eve to clean up the debris. They were reopened to traffic Thursday morning. The largest expected significant waves will be 4 feet with a potential maximum wave height of 5 feet, according to the notice.
A tornado watch is in effect until 3pm for Ballard County in western Kentucky, and for Alexander and Pulaski counties in southern IL.
The National Weather Service graphic below outlines the EF damage scale.
“Nothing showed on radar”, said Rich. “We’ll get a damage assessment”.
NWS says the tornado initially formed at or near Emerald Isle Drive. The weather service didn’t receive any reports of funnel clouds.
