Weather: Storm to bring light snow, then rain

Most of New Jersey, however, will see quiet weather through about midday.

Weekend snow won’t stick around for long, thanks to a warming trend that starts off the workweek.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 41.

Tuesday’s high temperatures will be in the 50s statewide, so everything that falls from the sky will be rain. In the U.S., the lowest temperature for Sunday was the minus 37 posted in Watertown, New York, near Lake Ontario and about 125 miles (200 km) south of Ottawa, the National Weather Service said. All rain/snow should end in the early morning hours on Wednesday.

Freezing rain changes to rain Monday night into Tuesday morning, but icy conditions could last into the Tuesday morning commute in the District and areas north and west. This is due to the track of the center storm up the Appalachians, eventually placing DC in the “warm sector” from this particular system. Up to 6 inches of snow and sleet are possible in other parts of western North Carolina.

The snow on Monday morning will begin southwest near Baltimore/Washington, and may be in Wilmington by 7:00 a.m. Soda Springs, Lava Hot Springs, Grace and Bancroft could see up to four inches of snow, while Downey, McCammon, Inkom, Preston and Malad could get up to two inches of the white stuff.

Travel in the Louisville area will likely be most hampered Sunday evening and Sunday night but travel problems could persist into early Monday. The precipiation continues on Tuesday, with scattered rain showers during the day and then heavier rain toward the evening. I would be very careful about this icing threat on Monday, especially between I-80 and I-195. Prior to the warmer air, there will be light snow before changing to rain.

Tuesday: Rain, heavy at times. Look for 0.5 to 1 inch of rain. However, roads and walkways will likely glaze, since temperatures for the past few days have stalled near freezing, and any travel should be delayed until afternoon if at all possible.

Meteorologist Carly Kovacik expects the winter storm watch to be upgraded to either a freezing rain or winter weather advisory abouot 4 p.m. Sunday.
