Bill Hader, Seth Meyers and Fred Armisen get together on the red carpet while attending the screening for their show Documentary Now! held at New World Stages on Tuesday (August 18) in New York City. Each episode is set to parody an iconic documentary. “We’re immensely proud of what they’ve created alongside Rhys, and thrilled with the buzz and critical acclaim the show is already receiving”. According to him, the telling of the Blue Jean Committee’s career will be a two-part series for the season finale of Documentary Now! IFC posted an OTT preview of episode two – “Dronez: The Hunt for El Chingon”, starring Jack Black – on Aug. 10 on Vice.com, IFC.com, YouTube, Dish channel 102 and IFC’s TV-everywhere extensions. To date, it’s garnered more than 250,000 views across all platforms.
Each episode of Documentary Now! tells an entirely fictional story in the style of a mockumentary. It has all the usual documentary trappings, including Errol Morris-like reenactments and grainy footage of weirdos a la the Maysles Brothers.
The Blue Jean Committee, a soft rock group straight out of the late-70’s Northampton music scene – so says their website “bio” – first made a splash in 2011 on SNL with band-mates Fred Armisen, Jason Segel, Kenan Thompson and Jason Sudeikis.
Documentary Now! is produced by Broadway Video and executive produced by Lorne Michaels.

Instead, they take inspiration from real-life projects like Vice’s hip documentary series and Alex Gibney’s The History of the Eagles, which they honor with a look at a fictitious 70’s band. John Mulaney (Mulaney, SNL) serves as consulting producer and Erik Kenward (SNL) is supervising producer.
