Week of severe weather claims 43 lives nationwide
The weather service issued severe weather advisories for large parts of the central United States, including a blizzard warning for parts of New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, as well as a flash flood watch, stretching from Texas to Indiana.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott yesterday declared a state of emergency across four counties, including the densely populated Dallas area where several tornadoes touched down late Saturday, the day after Christmas.
The rare December twisters that flattened homes and caused chaos on highways raised the death toll from days of deadly weather across the South to at least 28. The tornado’s path appears to be about two square miles.
The mayor of Garland which was hit hard on Saturday says on his official Facebook page that search teams are still looking through the rubble from an EF-4 tornado. About 600 city buildings were damaged or destroyed, and 30,000 people were left without power.
Meanwhile, three others died in Colin County, about 45 miles northeast of Dallas, sheriff’s deputy Chris Havey said.
“Heavy snowfall amounts of 10 to 18 inches are forecast through Sunday evening across much of western/northwestern Texas, with 18 to 24 inches forecast across portions of New Mexico”.
Martinez activated the National Guard for disaster assistance, and urged residents to stay off the roads. A state of emergency was declared on Sunday, with the National Guard mobilized to rescue stranded drivers, as high winds and blowing snow led to risky and life-threatening conditions.
In Missouri, Governor Jay Nixon said that at least eight fatalities due to flash flooding were reported in his state.
“There were sirens that were going off, I mean multiple times and in multiple areas, notifying people of a tornado”. The state Department of Emergency Management said eight storm-related injuries were reported, and about 60,000 homes and businesses were without power.
The storm system – while still powerful – was moving east and northeast and was expected to diminish in severity by Monday. Late Saturday, one death was reported in Alabama.

The high temperature in Dallas on Saturday was 82 degrees, which plummeted to 41 degrees on Sunday and will drop into the 30s on Monday. Three others died in other parts of Texas, bringing to 29 the number of people who have been killed by severe weather in the US this month.
Volunteers are distributing sandbags in the town of Elba, Alabama, as flooding remained a major concern after severe storms battered the state.
Conditions are especially perilous in places unused to heavy snowfall such as New Mexico, where urban areas lack snow removal equipment, and few drivers are experienced at driving safely in snow and ice.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says roads in northwest Oklahoma and Interstate 35 in central Oklahoma are slick and hazardous. Flights were temporarily halted from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
