Weekend Box Office: Above and Beyond

The sci-fi film starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana has a worldwide box office of $89.6 million. Looking at the numbers, Star Trek Beyond is already lagging behind Into Darkness, which over the course of its opening weekend back in 2013 made $31.7 million internationally as well as $70.1 million domestically for a total of $101.8 million.

Despite Star Trek Beyond Box Office raking up an awesome $59.6 million during its opening weekend, doubt has been raised as to the current series would deserve a fourth movie.

“Star Trek Beyond” is also counting on overseas audiences, some of whom have grown familiar with the 50-year-old property only recently, said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount.

The animated comedy “The Secret Life Of Pets” took second place with $29.3 million in its third weekend of release.

Star Trek Beyond helped to open the 2016 Comic-Con event in San Diego, California on Wednesday night (20Jul16), when the film’s stars took a moment to remember late castmember Anton Yelchin, who portrayed Chekov, after he died in a freak vehicle accident last month (Jun16).

The good news for Paramount is that Star Trek Beyond was critically well received, garnering an A- CinemaScore and an 86% user-approval rating on Flixster.

Coming in just behind that was ‘Ice Age: Collision Course’, the fifth entry in the should-be-extinct animated franchise.

Americans may be losing interest in the “Ice Age” characters, but the series has always been mostly a play for global sales.

The weekend’s other new release, “Lights Out”, a horror film about a family terrorized by a demon that only appears in the dark, opened to a strong $21.6 million in third place. Lucky for the producers, Paramount Pictures’ tracking puts the movie’s performance as the same as its Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which ultimately grossed $682 million internationally a year ago. ‘Finding Dory, ‘ $7.2 mn ($19.5 international); 6. The $29.3 million weekend brings its 17-day domestic total up to $260.7 million, which is very impressive given the movie’s $75 million budget. Fox Searchlight’s “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” opened outside the top 10 with $1.8 mn.

Other films in the USA box office top 10 include popular family films Finding Dory at number six and The Legend of Tarzan at seven.
