That puts the Finding Nemo sequel at almost $400 million in 10 days.

“‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ is the latest sequel of many this year that did not get great reviews and simply did not connect with audiences”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. That makes the second frame of the Pixar film the eighth biggest second weekend ever, wedged between the second weekends of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($74.2 million) and Captain America: Civil War ($72.6 million).

The Disney Pixar film took $73.2m (£54.6m), while The Independence Day sequel took a disappointing $41.6m (£31m). The other new film of the weekend was the Blake Lively starring THE SHALLOWS, which did pretty well given the competition and timing.

Premiering at No. 5 is STX Entertainment’s Free State of Jones, Matthew McConaughey’s first major release since starring in the 2014 sci-fi drama Interstellar.

“The Shallows” finished a close fourth behind New Line/Universal’s second weekend of “Central Intelligence”, which declined 48% to $18.4 million. Director Roland Emmerich has been talking about potential sequel ideas but a few more dollars will be needed before that comes to pass.

And this is here too, and since it completely ignores Superman 3 and 4, we’ll call it a continuation of Superman II (1980), which made $108.2 million back then, or about $333.9 million today (adjusted for ticket price inflation).

Central Intelligence, teaming Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart on the big screen for the first time, took in $4.7 million overseas for an early foreign total of $14.3 million and worldwide total of $83.6 million.

“The Neon Demon”, a twisted take on the modeling industry, was D.O.A.at the box office. The movie’s theater average is $783.

The sequel, budgeted at $165 million, was supposed to be 20th Century Fox’s major summer release, instead the studio ran as far from the release as possible, cutting back on its TV ads and not providing United States press with advanced screenings of the film leading up to the release.
