Weekend box office: Last Witch Hunter and Rock the Kasbah struggle

“The Last Witch Hunter” performed the best of this weekend’s new releases. “Kasbah” and “Jem” now rank among the worst openings of all time, and “Paranormal” missed expectations after weeks…
Rounding out the top 10: Guillermo Del Toro’s gothic thriller “Crimson Peak”, which dropped 57 percent in its second week to No. 8 with an estimated $5.6 million; the comedy “The Intern”, No. 9 in its fifth weekend, earning about $3.9 million; and the Christian sports drama “Woodlawn”, in 10th with $3.1 million.
After a successful limited release, Universal Studio’s biopic about the Apple founder expanded to over 2,400 theaters this weekend, but only made $7.3 million.
Bill Murray starrer “Rock the Kasbah” is fizzling at 2,012 locations, with a Friday take of $513,00 forecasting an opening weekend total of $1.5 million.
Vin Diesel’s The Last Witch Hunter suggests the Fast and Furious star isn’t much of a box office draw without his Furious family and a couple of musical bombs prove to be not only two of the worst openings of 2015, but of all-time given their theater count.
“Goosebumps”, starring Jack Black in an adaptation of the popular series of children’s books by R.L. Stine, should finish the weekend with a new domestic total of more than $42 million.
Universal’s Steve Jobs earned $294,000 in 1,748 theaters with shows beginning at 8 p.m. while Jem and the Holograms grossed $34,000 in 944 theaters after shows kicked off at 7 p.m. Based on the 1980s animated series, the film opened on 2,413 screens, averaging $545 per screen, to take 15th place.
The Hollywood press offered a variety of explanations why moviegoers snubbed the film, from the casting of actor Michael Fassbender in the title role, to the embarrassment of riches for theatergoers looking for cerebral entertainment, including Oscar contenders “Bridge of Spies” and “The Martian”.
“It feels to us actually clear that any points that we had weren’t associated to shopper conduct”, stated Megan Colligan, Paramount’s president of worldwide distribution and advertising.
