Weekend Box Office: Mockingjay Part 2 Holds First Place For Thanksgiving Holiday

“Part II”, the final installment of the “The Hunger Games” film franchise, topped the box office, with an estimated gross of $21 million, according Box Office Mojo. After Rocky Balboa did moderately well with a $12 million opening and $70 million domestic run in 2006, Creed made an even stronger start our of the corner, banking a solid $30 million over the weekend with $42 million total over the holiday weekend.

“Mockingjay – Part 2” may not reach the heights of the franchise’s top grossing film, “Catching Fire”, which made $424.6 million in the U.S.in 2013, but it should stand for fans as a celebration of a series that itself caught fire.

The Katniss kiss off slid 50% from its debut to earn an estimated $51.6 million from 4,175 theaters, which brings its ten-day total to $198.3 million. The latest animated offering from the Mouse House earned an estimated $39.2 million during the Friday-to-Sunday period and $55.6 million in its first five days.

“Creed”, also known as “Rocky 7”, is a film with Sylvester Stallone about an aging boxer coaching the son of his first antagonist. Openers include Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, with the studio trying to repeat the success they had with Inside Out.

That’s nowhere near the disappointment of Victor Frankenstein, though; that film, which stars Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, finished outside of the top ten altogether in its opening. The Fox pic should wrap up the five-day holiday with about $13 million.

The movie generated $2.4 million in weekend sales.

And in a year with some pretty massive box office numbers, “Hunger Games” had the fifth largest domestic opening.

Rounding out the top five were Spectre and The Peanuts Movie, which earned $12.8 million and $9.7 million, respectively. Pixar didn’t provide a budget number, but judging from the cost of its previous films, this one likely carries a $200 million price tag.
