Weekend Box Office: Zootopia Arrives With A Roar, Deadpool Passes $300 million

“Zootopia” sprung out the gate this weekend, grossing an estimated $73.7 million at the box office. Disney Animation’s previous biggest opening belonged to the 2013 blockbuster Frozen at $67.4 million.

Critics and audiences love the film, which features the voices of Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin.

The animated Disney flick “Zootopia” just had a stunning weekend in the box office, taking in $73.7 million domestically while bringing its total worldwide ticket sales to $232.5 million since opening three weeks ago.

Dave Hollis, Disney’s Executive Vice President of Distribution, said “Zootopia” is the latest in a “creative renaissance” for the Disney Animation group, including “Tangled”, “Frozen”, “Big Hero 6” and “Wreck-It Ralph”.

“Zootopia” has been screening in certain foreign territories for four weekends. Gods of Egypt, which brought in another $5 million after last week’s flop opening of $14 million. The film is also still holding a healthy 98 percent Rotten Tomatoes ranking. Although Deadpool still had plenty to celebrate as it passed the $300 million mark in North America, earning $16.3 million from 3,624 theaters in its fourth weekend for a domestic total of $311.2 million through Sunday.

The Ryan Reynolds-starrer now sits fourth among the highest-grossing superhero origin movies of all time. The movie beat two other new releases, Paramount Pictures’ comedy “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” starring Tina Fey and Focus Features’ action movie “London Has Fallen”.

As Deadline.com reported, the film was helped by strong sales in China and Russian Federation, which contributed an additional $63.4 million in ticket sales this weekend.
